Long-Term Volunteering

WHAT IS LTV?

Long Term Volunteering (LTV) programmes are an upgrade of workcamps, where the volunteers work at environmental or social projects for a longer period of time. LTV programmes represent a great opportunity mostly for the young, to gain work experience at the informal level on international projects. LTV is an intensive experience of living and working together within the long-term projects, which last anywhere from 1 to 12 months, depending on the position and host country.

List of current vacancies

It is possible to enter LTV projects for a longer period of time, with no age limit and to countries on other continents (some of these projects take place in Europe too). For instance, you could help teach English at a school in Togo, work with young people in a youth centre in Azerbaijan, help organise international workcamps in Tanzania, etc.

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME INTENDED FOR?

LTV is intended for volunteers that are over 21 years old and have previous experience with volunteer work or distinct motivation and commitment to active participation at a global level.

We are not looking for a certain type of volunteer, but we want to attract individuals who come from different backgrounds, have different experiences, appreciate volunteering, diversity, social activism, the development of local and global communities, and are ready to actively tackle current global issues.

WHAT WE OFFER TO THE VOLUNTEER

To the volunteers, we offer extensive and versatile instructions along with preparatory programme, including:

  • individual preparations, one day group preparatory seminar or three-day seminar on the topic of global learning and development (depending on the number of volunteers)
  • help and support with searching for a project, applying for it and coordinating between volunteers, acting as a sending or hosting organisation
  • project evaluation at the end of the exchange and support with further activities connected to the programmes of global development

We additionally support exchange participants in organisational and other procedures, and problems that may occur with the organisation of the trip to the project host country.

EXPENSES

Expenses vary from project to project, and for this reason we recommend getting informed about the situation in the selected host country before the final decision is made. On most of the exchanges in the non-European countries volunteers need to cover for the majority of the expenses, which include:

  • registration fee per project: 115 EUR
  • travelling costs to the country and any potential local transport costs
  • insurance, vaccination, visa fee
  • usually accommodation and food (stated in the programme description)

Why pay for the accommodation and food?

Many of the host organisations from the Global South countries do not have their own funds that they could use to cover volunteer’s expenses during the project duration. Usually the projects are initiated by small local communities that wish to achieve certain changes and improvements in their own environment through this global partnerships context. Unfortunately, oftentimes they do not have sufficient funds to cover volunteers’ needs. Nor does Zavod Voluntariat have sufficient funds to cover volunteer’s travel expenses and accommodation fees in the host country, however we can cover volunteers’ training and mentoring.

IN THE CASE OF LTV PROJECT CANCELLATION

In case a volunteer would like to cancel participation in the project, they need to notify us in a written form (e-mail)!

Voluntariat refunds the full amount (100%) of the registration fee, if the volunteer is not accepted to the desired camp, or the camp is cancelled.

Voluntariat refunds 50% of the full amount of the registration fee, if the volunteer cancels participation at least month and a half (45 days) before the camp starts (the host organisation needs to find a new volunteer).

Voluntariat refunds 75% of the full amount of the registration fee, if the volunteer provides a doctor’s note.

Voluntariat does not refund the registration fee, if the cancellation is too late.

Registration fees are returned once a month, on the last working week of the month.

HOW TO FIND AN LTV PROJECT

1. SELECTING A PROJECT

Every two months we post an updated list of current LTV programme projects. Long-term projects can also be found in the joint SCI project database of the partner organisations.

Every project includes a shorter description of volunteer work and life: theme, location, duration, application, vacancies, and languages. We advise that you are especially careful with the description of the work (Work), assurance of food and accommodation (Food and Accommodation), and finances: additional payments (Fees), visa and insurance (Visa, Insurance) and possibility of receiving pocket money (Pocket Money).

If you have any additional questions and doubts, please contact our placement officer in charge of LTV projects. You can find them in our office during office hours or via email at placement@zavod-voluntariat.si.

2. FILLING IN THE APPLICATION FORM

Fill in the application form for long-term volunteering projects and send it together with a motivation letter and CV to placement@zavod-voluntariat.si. In the application, express your wishes regarding the call options, i.e. how much time you would like to spend on a volunteer project and when can you start.

3. AGREEMENT WITH THE HOSTING ORGANISATION

We will pass your application to the host organisation. Based on the wishes expressed in the application, discussions with the host organisation will be held. If needed, we will invite you to a conversation in our office. The meeting is intended for identification of expectations and needs, not only of the volunteer, but also of the sending and host organisations.

4. CONTRACT

Final decision on whether you will be accepted the selected for the project is made by the host organisation. The next step is to sign a contract for a long-term project where obligations and rights of volunteer and host organisation are clearly defined (later on it has to be signed by the host organisation as well). The volunteer needs to take care of their necessary travel documents and vaccination. If needed, we provide a letter of guarantee for arranging a visa.
